How We Set Up New Youth Facilities

Ourside Youth Association

In Evesham the Ourside Youth Association now provides positive activities for young people from their centre in Bengeworth.

When Worcestershire County Council decided to stop delivering its own youth services and to commission local organisations to do it, the young people worked with local elected members, the Council for Voluntary Youth Services and other supporters to form a new organisation with charitable status and to successfully bid to be one of the local providers of activities and support for young people in Evesham.

Eight years of voluntary effort by this dedicated group of local young people led to the centre being set up. The group worked to prove the need for such a facility, consulted with local young people about what they wanted, lobbied for support and took roles of responsibility in negotiations with the Council, the landlord and the Charity Commission and now in running the organisation.

The organisation is led by a board of trustees, with key roles being fulfilled by young founder members who have stuck with the initiative since they launched the idea eight years ago.

Worcester Community Trust

In the city of Worcester, the Worcester Community Trust was formed through the merger of smaller local community associations and is now delivering youth, community and play services across the city supported by pooled funding from Worcestershire County Council and Worcester City Council through a Section 10 agreement.

This has enabled a strong offer of services across the city that has attracted additional funding from a number of other sources to enable the organisation to diversify and consolidate its support to the communities in areas of highest need across the city.

Malvern Cube

In Malvern, the Malvern Youth and Community Trust was formed in late 2010 to campaign for the future of their local youth centre and was successful in bidding to take over the running of Malvern Youth Centre, which it now leases at low cost from Worcestershire County Council.

The Trust runs the centre - now renamed The Cube – as a resource for the whole community and continues to host the positive activities for young people commissioned by the County Council.
